The term “meze” refers to the concept of taste. Meze is a collection of small dishes served alongside alcoholic beverages, either as a course or as appetizers, in Greece, Turkey, the Balkans, and the Middle East. It originated in the Sultan’s palace in Istanbul during the mid-sixteenth century and quickly gained popularity among the wealthy and famous who wanted to dine like the Sultan.
